NASA Ignite! Camp was a blast
Three, two, one, Blast off! That’s just what a group of students that “launched” the first NASA Ignite Camp did during two weeks of hands on learning. To jump start the 2011-2012 school year the students that attended camp, were exposed to projects that expanded their science, technology, engineering and math knowledge.
Throughout the camp, students explored various topics ranging from the Earth and Moon to engineering and the design process. To start things off, students studied basic design by creating protective vessels for eggs which simulated an astronaut in a spaceship. It was their mission to protect their astronaut from the elements of space, which was tested by dropping their vessel from an elevated platform. Students also learned the difference between observations and inferences while experimenting with sand and three mysterious substances. It was exciting to see and smell what reactions happened in the individual cups, and infer what was mixed in with the sand!
The final days of the NASA Ignite Camp were filled with enthusiastic students learning about density as they designed and engineered solar powered ovens, which roasted marshmallows for smores. At the end of the camp, every student left with a greater understanding about Space, NASA, and how science and math are incorporated into everyday life.
