Reading and living The Secret Garden

Jenny Buchta's fourth grade class has been reading The Secret Garden with gusto since returning from the winter progress.

As part of the reading, the class has been discussing the history of Great Britain and how it relates to the States, the nobility/caste system, and cultural differences between our two countries.

The class wore red in honor of “The red coats” and sashes ranking ourselves from King/Queen to Baroness and Knight. Some of the names on the sashes are Baroness Thatcher (first female prime minister), Sir Winston Churchill, the Dukes of York and Lancaster (War of Roses, anyone?), Lady-in-waiting, Queen Mother, Madam Royal and Prince of Wales, and Duchess of Devonshire (England’s version of Paris Hilton in the Regency-era).

Additionally, the class discussed the triangular trade route (in the Civil War unit) and how Great Britain and Europe played an important role in shaping the Confederacy’s decisions.
