If what they say is true – that a good offense is the best defense – then our Fall Creek Academy Athletic Department is going to score big against cancer.
Athletic Director and high school teacher Mike Elliott is raising cancer awareness at FCA by joining the Coaches versus Cancer movement.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Schools can participate in the effort in a number of ways.
For one, the FCA Boys Basketball program designated their January 31 basketball game as its Coaches vs. Cancer game. The Athletic Department designated donation buckets in the gymnasium during the game and, at the game, both the visiting coach and our Fall Creek Engineer coaches wore suits with sneakers in observance of the cause.
“There are students whose family have been directly affected and devastated by this terrible disease,” Elliott says. “And we wanted to raise funds on that day to help in the fight against cancer.
“We’re also trying something else at the school,” Elliott continues. “The Athletic Department is asking that the students build a wall of hope with $1 donation cards that we’re distributing. So far, the wall, located in the cafeteria, has raised $200.00. We’re very proud of our kids’ efforts.”
Donations can also be made online. Please go to www.cancer.org for an online donation.
Please join in the Athletic Department’s efforts by spreading the word throughout your classrooms, advisories, homes and workplaces. With continuing support, continuing advances are made against this insidious and cruel disease.
