Teaching with novels
February 26, 2010
Mrs. Buchta's fourth grade classroom theme for the year is "A Year of Independence." In order to utilize this theme in literature and guided reading curriculum, she picked various novels to use with her fourth graders, including Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.
"This novel was a favorite of mine as a young student, and I truly believe that my fourth graders will love it just as much as I did!" said Mrs. Buchta.
But, in order to begin her language arts literature curriculum, she needed 31 copies of the book and an audio CD for her special education students. With limited classroom resources, she turned to Donors Choose.
"We will learn about the plight of the Jewish people during World War II and attempt to relate this to our own lives and challenges," said Mrs. Buchta. "We will see how we, as fourth graders, can change the world for the better, as the main character did in her own story."
