Reading into history
December 27, 2009
Mrs. Buchta's fourth grade classroom theme for the year is "A Year of Independence."
In order to utilize this theme in her literature and guided reading curriculum, she picked various novels to use with her fourth graders, including Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.
"This novel was a favorite of mine as a young student, and I truly believe that my fourth graders will love it just as much as I did!" said Mrs. Buchta.
But, in order to begin her language arts literature curriculum, she turned to Donors Choose for 31 copies of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry so that the class can begin reading the book as a class.
With the support of several individuals, Mrs. Buchta's class now has the books they need.
"This novel is very appropriate for our world's political situation and can be integrated into my social studies curriculum when discussing European history and geography," said Mrs. Buchta.
"We will see how we, as fourth graders, can change the world for the better, as the main character did in her own story. I am also asking for a CD of the book so that any special education students may participate in the discussion and reading as well."
